Family and Culture

When I think of culture, my mind tends to go back to ancient civilizations or foreign countries and learning about their different cultures in history classes. However, culture isn't something outdated or a thing of the past. Culture still exists today on various levels. As a country, the United States has our own culture, yet a lot of subcultures as the country is made up of different races, ethnicities, etc. As students at BYU-Idaho, there is a culture of love and kindness both on campus and in our housing complexes. Families can also have their own culture. As two people (who grew up either completely different from one another or oddly similar) get married and start a life together, they create their own culture and way of life among their family that is often different from those around them. Sexual Intimacy and Family Life

This week in class we talked about sexual intimacy in marriage and after starting a family. To some, this topic can seem weird and something that should be kept private, but I think at our age we are able to have a mature conversation about it and learn about those boundaries in marriage. After all, if we are preparing to get married, then we should be able to have a conversation like this. I particularly enjoyed class this week because we were able to have open and honest conversation that was straight to the point without dancing around any words or ideas. Here's what I learned: Many couples experience different phases in life and in their marriage. It starts with before the marriage and the excitement/anticipation to be intimate on your wedding night. Then comes the "honeymoon phase" where you and your spouse can't get enough of each other, you're able to have sex for the first time and grow closer to one another, and have fun. Married, a Home, and a Baby... Now what?

Picture this scenario: you and your husband have been married for almost a year and you're coming up on your 1 year anniversary. You are still experiencing that honeymoon phase and you just can't get enough of each other. You two are attached at the hip, love spending time together, and have enjoyed this new journey of married life. A recent topic of discussion between you two is about when you guys would like to start your family and have children. It makes you a little worried, however, because you've heard people talk about how once you have a baby your marriage with your spouse goes down hill. You want to start having children, you really do, but you don't want to lose this closeness and bond with your spouse.
